Not For Resale: A Video Game Store Documentary | Trailer

I opened the store just 25 years ago. I had a mail-order business called Master The Game… in the back of EGM and Game Pro. The store is a little bit like a museum… and I would imagine most game store
owners feel that way. I really just love being around people passionate about the same things I’m passionate about. When I was dreaming about ‘I’d like to
have a game company,’ my dreams were walking into a store and seeing it on a
shelf. By the time I got to where we were shipping our own games It was like “okay, we should do this all digitally.” You could buy video games… on your xbox… over the Internet. Oh yeah, I can DOWNLOAD this game. I think the benefits of the
consumer about digital distribution is freedom. Anyone can make anything. You can get this game out to people. Well if I buy it… what happens? What do you own? It’s not an artifact that can be passed
from one hand to the other. Yes, you have those things but now no one else can. You kind of get to come back and relive those moments… Times that were a little
less stressful than they are today. I didn’t think I wanted to be a
business owner but I love it. I don’t think I could go back now. I think I mostly download games now. Maybe you don’t want to own all these
pieces of plastic and paper. Games, just in the fact that they’re sort of like ever changing ever developing… It’s not something you can really like latch on to and say like this is the definitive thing. It’s like ever-changing. Everything in the world is moving toward
replacing people and having to pay them. It’s not about the game. It’s about how they came across the game.

Of course leading up to this, Sony decides to stop allowing retail stores to sell digital copies of games.

The social exchange of going into a store, talking to others that share your same interests can be very positive & important. The industry trying to discourage people from going out & interacting with others feels like a step in the wrong direction.

There are plenty of pros to downloading content online, but I can't wait for this documentary to come out to explore the cost at which this convenience comes at.

I went on a road trip to Florida and visited my first "retro" game store. My teenage years cramped into a small booth at an outlet mall…The feeling is weird, to say the least.

Wonderful to see the trailer up! Question, the woman speaking at 1:12 , what is her name and which store is she the business owner of? And will the blu rays be available at wholesale for game store owners to sell in store?

Sorry I still prefer physical copy of a game.. same goes for movies, blu ray over streaming. Only music I will buy digital 99% of the time.

I only went looking for this because it was vaguely implied in a podcast that this was viewable on twitter and their official page. Didn't hear the word trailer once. Now I'm pissed off. I live in the American Midwest. It's basically impossible for me to make a screening. I'm going to go out of my way not to watch this doc now.

I'm also shocked you went to 8bit and up instead of video games NYC…. 8bit is more of a hangout spot instead of a store …I've been there a few times , horrible selection and it seriously smells like stale beer and weed … video games NYC is 50x better of a store

    0:58 Oh hey, Lost Ark!

It just sucks that a lot of their retro games (both console in the front and arcade in the back) have been replaced with more modern Japanese games and items.

I guess that's what happens when you have a retro games store a stone's throw away from UNCG. You give the clientele what they want or you go out of business.
