No Bargain – Winner of the Bricks in Motion SHAC 2018 Contest

(prison door buzzs) It’s no use. They all say I’m guilty. They all say I killed her. You know that’s not true. It’ll take a miracle … to get outta here. Listen to me. You and I both know that
you didn’t kill her. There’s not enough evidence to convict you. There’s not enough to clear me, either. I don’t know, okay? I can’t keep fighting forever. ♪ (Wessex) Still going, I see? He’s innocent. I know it. Oh come on. He was there at the scene,
with the weapon, near the body. I’m not so sure,
his alibi is watertight … Maybe you can get him out on
insanity, or something. Meet the jury halfway. Think about it. If you lose this case, it’ll destroy your reputation. Few anticipate any other
outcome in this case. as the limited evidence suggests the defendent is guilty as charged. There’s no possibilty of release, but perhaps the defendant’s
sentence can be reduced with the proper bargain. Well, do you have anything to say, Counselor? Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, ♪ (sigh) We have come to a standstill. Here sits before you a man, convicted of a terrible crime, at an impasse in the system. And over the past few days, This court has been unable to prove or disprove this man’s innocence. We have been blocked by technicalities. The evidence is not enough
to convict or clear this man. It would be easy for us
to bring it to an end, declare the guilty party and move along. Maybe allow a bargain of some sort. Claim insanity, or a troubled mind. Meet halfway. But that’s not what justice is about. This courtroom was founded on an idea: that all men, innocent, guilty, deserve a chance to let the truth speak. We, the people, have a duty to uncover the
truth and bring it to light. I know that it would be far easier to judge my client as guilty, and move along to the next case, but until that is proven
beyond reasonable doubt, we cannot settle for anything
other than a just sentence. We cannot turn our focus to a
bargain, or a deal. Do you understand all that
you’re risking right now? Your Honor, what more do we risk if justice becomes a shortcut? Your Honor, I’ve found new
evidence critical to this case. Objection, your Honor! I will allow it.
Continue with your evidence. This video was recovered
from the scene of the crime, proving beyond reasonable
doubt that this man is innocent. ♪

Simply marvelous video, Gold Brick! Although "No Bargain" wasn't every judges #1 pick, we all had it in the top 3 from the beginning. I really think it is one of the best entries!

I'd rank this right up there with Vertigo Studios' "Loyalty" and Nathan Wells' "Beast" – two of my favorite brickfilms. All three have a serious tone, yet never take things too far. Yours, in particular, has great pacing.

I would have loved to have seen the lawyer debate with himself for longer before putting justice over compromising… but with the time limit, I can completely understand if you couldn't make it any longer.

My only criticism is that the lighting is a bit harsh and bright. (Several shots have the white walls and minifigs' faces overblown) For the subject matter, lighting things a bit darker and more moody (apart from the opening in the prison) would have probably made "No Bargain" a no brainer for 1st place to the other judges.

Still, this is a great brickfilm. I'm sure to revisit it for years to come!
