What happened to the sand boxes. When I was young sand was used to gain traction on slick rails

Oh, assholes that! Sand cups of coffee! The locomotive has its own system of sand supply under the wheels, just have to monitor the performance of this system.

After reading the description of events we must come to one conclusion. Old rigid frame loco's must be very particular about the modern tracks they choose to run on. Also , when playing with grease one must also carry an ample supply of DE-GREASER.

LIma loco works had a truck . "not big" fit on the tracks and jumped on or off the rails as needed and carried buckets. They would go to trouble spots around LIma, findlay, arcadia.and fostoria.ect dump small bits of sand. Just enough to go.

only some inconsiderate ultra-boob would grease the rails……….that's also criminal public endangerment, i hope the cops catch the worthless S.O.B. who did it. (and if i was the judge at the trial, i'd see the 2-legged turd doing 10 years in prison, with a further 15 years probation, with stupidities like that grease stunt a parole violation.)…….nano-brained stunts like that are a VERY good argument for sterilization.
of course, if anybody got killed by that stupid with the grease, then i'd make it "life without parole of repreive—MINUM!!"

An old smoker!!! Used to see them come thru Chamblee, GA in the early 50's. Years later, late 60's,while at Inman Yards, Southern Railway, Atlanta, GA they had some of those retired old big steam smokers sitting in the yard. An engineer explained..small diameter wheels give you power..large diameter give you speed. The engineer was in a newer Diesel-Electric locomotive with small wheels for tremendous power driven from a generator and axle traction motors. When the locomotive had wheel slippage sensors sent a signal to release or blow "sand" on the track in front of the wheel for adhesion. The engineer said it was not ordinary sand but granular quartz or silica particles resembling sand. He had started at the railroad years ago as a " Fireman " shoveling coal into the belly of the beast to keep fire in the boiler going. The old timer said.." you don't know what fun is until you bend over shoveling coal for hours, the heat from the boiler hitting you in the face, and that August sun hitting you in the ass. A lot of those old school guys wouldn't talk much, you had to pull talk out of them but when they did you shut the hell up and listened to their stories and wisdom. A rare and vanishing breed.

There is a lever, right besides the throttle, which is connected to a small device called a ‘sand container’. 🤬This sand is used to throw it right in front of the train-wheels to keep them from spinning. You rather use that sand instead of spinning these wheels into oblivion! What a waste……nice vid though thanks for sharing this with me 👍👍
