31 Days of Learning English – Day 2 – It’s time to improve your English – Meal Words / Unboxing

yes we are here again we have made it
all the way to day number two of 31 days of learning English hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in
England how are you today are you ok I hope so are you happy well
are you happy I really hope so because we have made it all the way today to of
31 days of October and of course 31 days of learning English I will be with you
every day during October just in case you missed it yesterday and you have no
idea of what any of this is about my name is Duncan I teach English and I’ve
been doing it for many many years in fact and this year I am celebrating my
13th anniversary on YouTube during October and as a way of celebrating I am
here with you every day for those who want to actually see the live times here
they are now on the screen 31 days of live English during October Monday to
Friday 2 p.m. UK time so from Monday to Friday 2 p.m. Saturday 12 p.m. which of
course is midday UK time and on Sunday as well I am here with you as usual from
2 p.m. UK time so yes your your eyes do not deceive you I am definitely here for
the whole of October every single day and the big question is will I make it
all the way through October well we’ll have to wait and see because it’s only
day two oh I have to be honest with you I was feeling so nervous yesterday now I
always feel a little bit nervous before my livestream begins but yesterday I
don’t know why I felt a lot of pressure yesterday however today I don’t feel so
bad because well first of all the weather is gorgeous you have already
seen the view outside the window there it is again
it is a glorious day and yes that is a live view looking out of the window into
the distance you can see the sun is actually shining today and in the
distance you can see way into the distance there is some traffic you
might see the occasional car or lorry go by and there we are looking into the
distance towards a place called Shrewsbury which is in Shropshire which
is also where I am as well today so I hope you are ok how has your week been
so far has it been good have you had a good week that is the big question
another question of course is who is first on the live chat so let’s have a
look shall we hello to the live chatters hi everybody

you are 31 wow that is so young I wish I really wish I was 31 again can I tell
you something you might not realize this yet if you are a young person you might
not realize that between the age of 30 and 40 you actually have the best years
of your life so my advice right now to anyone under
the age of 30 enjoy your 30s they they will prove to
be the most important years of your life trust me so don’t listen to what anyone
says about when they say life begins later in life life gets more exciting
make the most of your 30s because between the age of 30 and 40 you will
find that life holds many and I mean many opportunities for you mmm that is
just my opinion of course you might disagree hello Luis Luis Mendez nice to
see you here today I am feeling SuperDuper in my studio talking live to
the world hi to everyone out there also hello to coup bada

Maiden or maybe ac/dc or maybe a little rainbow lots of famous rock bands from
the 1980s or should I say heavy metal so heavy
metal is a type of rock lots of screaming guitars and thumping drumbeats
heavy metal who remembers heavy metal from the 1980s oh dear
Guadalupe is saying hello to TS because apparently it is tea asses birthday so

moderators so I hope you will keep control and make sure everything goes
well on the live chat hello also to Joy T or joy Jyoti Jyoti
Singh hello to you and welcome to the live chat yes your eyes don’t deceive
you I am here today and also every day during October but what is the reason
for this why am I doing this during October well here is a clue well
it’s been another busy week and of course as usual I’ve been in a school
teaching English that’s my job I think one of the most common questions I’m
asked during my time here in China by my students is how can I improve my English there’s one thing I’ve noticed my
fingers have gone dead look my fingers have got a strange ready blue purpley
pink color not very good I think I think if I stay outside much longer I think
they will fall off hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today
are you okay I hope so are you happy I hope so
welcome to the very first episode of my series of English teaching videos you
know the world of English is a fun and exciting place to be I’m so glad you
could join us for another lesson why do we need phonetics the reason why we need
a phonetic code is because some English letters have more than one sound and
because some letters when joined together in a word actually create a new
sound of their own also there is the silent letter that can appear within a
word and there it is a short compilation of
some of my videos from the past 13 years and during the month of October I will
be with you every day this is day 2 of 31 days of learning English of course my
anniversary is not until the 31st so it’s actually the 31st of October the
actual anniversary of the creation of my youtube channel a lot of people on the
live stream right now hello – Mika now Mika says I completely agree with
you mr. Duncan yes if I could go back in time I would like to go back to when I
was in my 30s as I said a few moments ago you might not realize it especially
if you are young if you are under 30 can I tell you now I’m going to give you a
really good tip enjoy your 30s I don’t know why there is something special
about being 30 to 40 so between the ages of 30 and 40 they are the best years as
far as opportunity is concerned you will find that all your greatest moments and
certainly your greatest opportunities will come during your 30s I’m not joking
take it from someone who has already experienced their 30s and I had a great
time during my 30s I must be honest I went on all sorts of adventures I really
did including going to China so I actually went to China in my 30s
Palmeiras says a big round of applause to all a person or all the people who
are here for the first time thank you very much for that that’s lovely I think
I might be the only Egyptian here says moaned ballooned 30
well guess what you might not be because I do know that I have a lot of people
watching in Egypt so happy birthday once again 2ts hello Andrew
I like walking down memory lane sometimes usually late at night this is
something we mentioned yesterday on the live stream we like to remember our past
we like to reflect on the things that happened in our life and of course as I
just mentioned you might find as you get older that you constantly think about
your thirties it’s a great time to be alive during your thirties I think your
first youtube video was made when you are in your 30s am i right well in fact
no no I was already over 40 when I started making my youtube videos Palmira
says no smartphones yet no when I started making my YouTube videos there
weren’t many smartphones around there were certainly no iPhones when I started
making my youtube lessons Palmyra I cannot remember how I discovered mr.
Duncan now that’s an interesting subject which I might talk about on another day
so how did you find my lessons how did you discover them what were you doing at
the time maybe you were browsing the Internet
maybe you were looking around for something to watch perhaps you were
actually searching for English teaching videos so how did you find my lessons
how did you first discover the world of English with mr. Duncan
all by the way I’ve got something to share with you right now this morning I
received another parcel another package now yesterday I did some serious
unboxing and today I have another box that I have to open now I already know
what’s in here to be honest I haven’t opened it yet but I actually know what
is in here so first of all we’re going to do a little unboxing now I have to be
careful because my address is on the front of this box so I have to be
careful that no one sees my address I don’t want people coming around to visit
my house doo doo doo okay so let’s see what is in the box I have my little
knife here don’t forget children any young people
watching don’t play with knives so let’s open the
box isn’t this exciting okay well this is
interesting now inside the box there are some some
envelopes and each of these envelopes contains one
item so I am going to open one of the envelopes so you can see what has been
sent to me isn’t this exciting or my goodness yes I thought so I have had
I’ve had some new bulbs delivered some bulbs for the lights in my studio so
these are special bulbs which I have to use for my specialist studio lighting so
these arrived just before I started my livestream
and there you can see one of the small bulbs this is a light bulb that I have
to use in my specialist lighting in the studio and there is one of them on your
screen right now so that’s what came this morning through the post and I
ordered one I ordered six of these and of course once again your lovely
donations have helped me purchase these bulbs and if you want to make a donation
you are more than welcome to do so the address is now on the screen if you
would like to help my work continue especially during October because I’m
with you every single day there is my paypal address and thank you
to all those who have made donations thank you also to my patreon supporters
as well thank you very much for helping to support me and helping to support my
English lessons here on YouTube we are going into the kitchen in a little while
because today I’m going to talk about words and phrases connected to eating
and if you are a person who has followed me for many years you will know that I
love eating very much so into the kitchen and there it is the kitchen is
waiting you can see we have our kitchen cam our kitchen camera is all ready to
go and I’m going to be looking at words and phrases connected to eating certain
types of food and meals that you have during the day all of that coming later
on but for now it’s back to the live chat hello Lois mr. Duncan
in October 2009 you are trying to make a livestream every single day but
you also made a lesson every single day in October
now that was that was actually can you believe it that was in 2013 so the last
time I made a lesson every day during October was was actually in 2013 so long
ago so yes there was 31 days of dunk towba but of course those lessons were
recorded they weren’t live so this year I’m doing
a live stream every single day oh goodness
Sally is here hello mister don’t cone I discovered you through my friend she
sent me many channels and the one I chose was yours thank you very much
Thank You Sally it’s very interesting to find out how you discovered my youtube
channel hello also Touro sir hello ro sir also
the King English show says hello mr. Duncan hello to you as well thanks for
joining me I have some light bulbs because unfortunately my studio lights
normally don’t last very long because I used them a lot so now I have some new
light bulbs some new lights that I can use in my studio so you can see my face
I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing
palmyra says your kitchen is very closed and the owners are the men i don’t know
what that means by the way mr. duncan our bulbs pronounced like you bulbs no
oh the sound is oh oh bulbs bulbs oh so the sound is that sound like
bulb light bulb bulb it’s actually a very strange word to pronounce safar n’
or sahara fan says hello mr. Duncan how are you I’m okay not too bad thank you
at just after half past two on what is it today Wednesday Wednesday and we will
be going into the kitchen in a few moments to have a look at some words and
phrases to do with eating and meals and the way you can feel when you are eating
or when you haven’t eaten as well ana says I agree with you let’s give mr.
Duncan a thumbs up oh thank you very much
I could I could do with lots of thumbs up so if you want to give me a thumbs up
feel free you are more than welcome to do so thank you to marina as well thank
you to Louie Louie hello Louie Louie my goodness you are becoming a TV show or a
TV reality show I’m not sure about that does does anyone out there watch reality
TV I don’t I I tend not to watch it the
only reason why I don’t watch it is because a lot of it is fake it is all
rehearsed it isn’t actually reality it is created reality Palmira thank you
very much for your comment about the kitchen I don’t know what you mean your
kitchen is very cozy oh I see cozy I love that word if something is
cozy it means it is very comfortable it is cozy thank you David for your
greeting thank you also to Megha who who asks mr. Duncan
howdy a big howdy to you as well pal Mira is here and also
Sharon is here as well would you like to join me in the kitchen now I am going to
take a little stroll into the kitchen because I am going to show you some
words and talk about ways of talking about things to do with food eating and
all of the other things connected to it as well
Noemi says I was looking for YouTube channels in English and I found one
which was strongly recommended or strongly recommended you as one of the
best and that was in 2017 thank you very much for that that’s very kind of you
how do i improve my spoken English well this is something that I talk about a
lot because that is my job one of the best ways to improve your spoken English
is to get used to doing it so it’s a little bit like exercise if you want to
run like a professional runner then you have to practise running if you want to
speak English then you have to practise speaking so don’t be afraid one of the
first things you have to do is to break down your your nervousness you have to
gain some confidence so a lot of people normally feel a little afraid when they
start speaking English for the first time so as as the cliche as the proverb
says practice does make perfect I am having coffee right now says Anna don’t
you have coffee today yes I did have coffee I had a cup of coffee earlier
today hello also to Paulette hello Paulette
hello mr. Duncan from Brazil have a lovely day I always try my best to have
a lovely day I don’t always
Ede but I always try my best to have a good day
Rosa what does the word kudos mean well kudos normally is used to to express
maybe admiration so if you want to gain admiration if you want to gain notoriety
you we normally use the phrase kudos kudos to you well then you are
successful it something Jang says I have learnt a lot from your videos and now I
am studying in reading which is in England welcome to England that is great
thank you so much Thank You G Aang Jang Kwang you are
welcome so let’s go into the kitchen shall we
it is time to take a walk and every Wednesday we will be in the kitchen
during the month of October and now that is exactly what I’m getting to do into
the kitchen we go… this is going very well don’t you think
can you hear me now I hope you can hear me now because this is not going very
well unfortunately there is always a technical problem and I don’t know what
is happening anyway we’ll try again breakfast the first meal of the day the
first thing we do in the morning is eat breakfast mr. Steve likes to have
porridge for breakfast do you have breakfast and of course the word
breakfast is made up of two words break fast now the word fast normally means to
go without food for a certain period of time so normally the word fast means to
go without food and of course break means to stop doing something so if you
stop fasting you break your fast hence the word breakfast so I hope you can
hear me now next is brunch I wonder what the word brunch means brunch is a very
interesting word do you know what it means one of the problems with being in
another room is you can’t see what is actually going out so brunch is normally
a meal that is taken mid morning so during the morning between breakfast and
lunch you might have something to eat hence the word branch so brunch is kind
of a combination of breakfast and lunch it is something that you eat mid morning
between having breakfast and eating your lunch
I feel like Bob Dylan holding these I feel like Bob Dylan’s I wonder if anyone
will understand that reference lunch time my favorite time of the day is
lunch time I love lunch time very much because at lunch time I can have my big
meal so a lot of people have lunch some might say that lunch is the most
important meal of the day so lunch is your mid-day meal you’re halfway through
the day meal so not morning not evening lunch lunch time is a time where you can
have a break from your job you can have maybe one hour or half an hour to eat
your lunch another word coming up right now now this is where there is some
confusion because some people use the word dinner when they want to mean lunch
so this particular word can actually mean your lunch or it can also mean your
evening meal as well so maybe your evening meal can
be dinner or your lunch can also be called dinner so dinner can be the meal
that you eat at lunchtime or in the evening so that particular word has more
than one use more than one use I hope you were enjoying this today I apologize
for the slight technical problem one of the problems with being in different
rooms is that sometimes you can’t see if there’s a problem something that has more than one use so
a little bit like dinner this word can also have more than one use it can be
used in more than one way the word is tea tea now tea can be a drink that you
drink in the morning or afternoon so T is a type of leaf that is dried and then
you drink it with hot water and some people have tea with milk and
sugar like me so tea but also tea can be your evening meal so some people say T
to mean evening meal so when you have your evening meal you will have your tea
it is time for tea so that doesn’t mean the drink that actually means food so it
is the same as your evening dinner your evening dinner it is tea time so
normally here in the UK tea time or dinner time is around about
six or maybe seven o’clock another word now now
this normally is the meal that you will eat later
much later so supper is normally a meal that you eat at night so maybe if you
have been working late you get home late and you feel hungry you might want to
eat some supper supper so supper is evening meal or late
evening or it can even be very late at night so you might have your supper
before going to bed here is a word that I know very well snack I don’t know
about you but I do like eating snacks a snack is a short small meal something
you can eat quickly maybe a bar of chocolate or maybe some biscuits or
perhaps a sandwich so a snack is normally a small meal something that you
can eat very quickly something that you can consume fast quite often when you
are on the go so maybe you are busy doing other things so you grab a snack
you grab a snack you take a snack you have a snack here’s another word that
has more than one use bite so normally bite is the action of cutting into
something with your teeth you bite you bite into a sandwich but also we can use
this word to describe the quick meal or a snack so if you have a bite it means
you are having something quick to eat something very quickly something fast so
you are having a bite you are having a snack would you
like a bite yes I would like a bite that means snack would you like a quick meal
something to eat and it won’t take very long to prepare it is just a bite when
you feel hungry this is how you will feel normally so we all know the feeling
of being hungry you feel as if your stomach is empty you feel peckish
peckish so a very interesting word the word peckish means to feel hungry you
want hmm something to eat you feel peckish you want to eat some food so if
you feel peckish it means that you are hungry you feel hungry you want
something to eat so hunger is feeling hungry
you feel hungry you have hunger hunger also desire can mean hunger so if you
have a strong desire to do something or something you really want to do you can
also use the word hunger i hunger for love i hunger for success i hunger for
fame and fortune i am hungry for it and starving now this is a word that a lot
of people use many people often use this inappropriately they might say oh I am
starving I am starving but really they are not starving
so starving means to go without food for a very long time so a long period of not
eating is starving you are feeling starving another word now famished if
you are famished it means you feel very hungry very
similar to starving and now we’re going back to the studio and let’s hope the
equipment works we are back in the studio I hope you are still here and
we’re back I do apologize once again for the problem there
there was a slight technical problem there was no sound but now the sound is
back and I hope you can hear me oh-kay it is Wednesday afternoon and it is five
minutes away from three o’clock already I can’t believe how fast this has gone
but don’t worry because guess what I’m back tomorrow in fact I will be back
tomorrow and every day during October 31 days of learning English Monday to
Friday 2 p.m. UK time Saturday midday just after lunch and on Sunday 2 p.m. UK
time those are the times and if you want to make a donation you can to help my
work continue forever and ever and ever thank you very much for your company
today back to the live chat briefly before I go dad
Abdo says wow there so many words for meal there are there
are many different types of meal and to be honest with you there are many others
as well for example there is buffet buffet have you ever been to a buffet so
when we say buffet we mean a meal that you pick from a table so quite often the
food will be laid out on a table and then you will choose which food you want
to eat so the food is already prepared and on
the table and then you will go up and you will choose what you want to eat so
we call that a buffet buffet and the reader says another one bites the dust
by Queen yes that is a song that uses the word bite another one bites the dust
by Queen well done Palmyra I think about real famine I think about real famine
but we only read we read only in the books or of course you might see it on
television so when we think of famine we normally think of a serious shortage of
food where there is very little food around so maybe in a country that has
had a harsh summer if there is a shortage of food if there is a shortage
of food to eat you might say famished or starving Louis Lewis says great lesson
very interesting thank you mr. Duncan thank you as well and I do apologize for
the slight problem with the sound earlier but it is live and that is one
of the joys of doing a live stream you never know what is
to happen hello also to David gee mr. Duncan will you be covering brexit on
October the 31st well I will be on on the same day because my anniversary is
also on the 31st of October so yes the anniversary of my youtube-channel just
happens to be the same date as the UK leaving the European Union isn’t that
strange but I will be with you every day I am back tomorrow
don’t forget I’m here tomorrow back again from 2 p.m. UK time for Thursday’s
day 3 of 31 days of learning English mr. Duncan what is a banquet hello Lois
banquet now a banquet is normally a meal that is served in very opulent
surroundings quite often a banquet is a special dinner that is hosted maybe why
by one person or two people or maybe it is in a certain place or a special place
and quite often all of the food that is served is high quality and very good so
a banquet means lavish meal so if you have a lavish meal very opulent
everything is expensive maybe the knives and forks are made of
gold banquet and the food is of the highest quality available that is what
we call a banquet so I hope that helps you there Lois thank you Manoj Thank You
Deion’s thank you also to Ramsey Nora thank you very much famished peckish
teatime supper brunch these are all new thank you very much for letting me know
and that is the reason why I’m here Thank You Sally thank you David I am
going now because it is coming up to three o’clock and I always leave you at
3:00 from 2:00 until 3:00 every day during the week 31 days of live English
Monday to Friday 2 p.m. UK time and on Saturday 12:00 midday Sunday 2:00 p.m.
so there’s no excuse now for not knowing I will see you tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. UK
time Thank You Rahul thank you also to Mika Thank You mr. Duncan for today’s
lesson thank you very much and once more I apologize for the slight problem with
the sound in the kitchen but at least I managed to
fix it at least I was able to repair it this is mr. Duncan in the birthplace of
English saying catch you later see you tomorrow for day 3 of 31 days of
learning English and of course you know what’s coming next until tomorrow… ta ta for now 😎
